Allegheny County Reports First Measles Case at McCandless Target

First Case Confirmed in Allegheny County

Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed the first measles case in Allegheny County involving an unvaccinated minor, contributing to a broader state milestone of over 1,000 confirmed cases. The pediatric patient is not enrolled in school, and known exposure points are restricted to two visits to a pediatrician and a retail store. [1]

Public Exposure Warning at McCandless Target

The Allegheny County Health Department identified a potential exposure risk at the Target store inside the Pine Creek Shopping Center on McKnight Road. Individuals who visited the location on Thursday, Oct. 1, between 3:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. may have been exposed to the virus. Medical Director Jillian Irwin noted that the virus can remain airborne for a two-hour window following an infected person's presence. [1]

Symptoms and Vaccination Guidance

Health officials advise that symptoms typically emerge seven to 21 days after exposure, starting with cold-like signs such as a cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis, followed by a measles rash. Unvaccinated individuals who believe they were exposed are instructed to contact a healthcare provider prior to visiting a facility. Uninsured residents can receive the MMR vaccine at the health department immunization clinic located at 425 First Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. [1]
