Sakkari Overcomes Slow Start
Maria Sakkari secured a dramatic opening-round victory at the Singapore Open after defeating 21-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova. Following a difficult stretch through 2025 and 2026 where she frequently exited tournaments early, Sakkari initially struggled and was broken in the first game. However, she capitalized on a wave of unforced errors from Fruhvirtova to level the first set at 4-all before taking it 6-4. [1]
Advancing to the Second Round
With full momentum after her first-set comeback, Sakkari dominated the second set and reeled off eight consecutive games. Fruhvirtova battled through double faults and managed to win just one game in the second set before Sakkari closed out the match holding at 5-1. According to Lob and Smash, Sakkari will advance to the second round to face Nao Hibino. [1]
