Two-time major champion Jon Rahm is planning to leave LIV Golf after determining that the proposed terms for the league's next phase, referred to as LIV 2.0, are unacceptable. John Beck, a lawyer representing Rahm, announced the decision during a US bankruptcy court hearing, stating that the Spanish golfer independently reviewed the new terms and chose not to participate going forward. Court documents list Rahm as the largest unsecured player creditor, holding a claim of $7.5 million. Representatives for Rahm and LIV are currently in advanced discussions regarding a consensual separation agreement, which is expected to be finalized by a court hearing on November 5. [1] [2]
LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey in September following the withdrawal of multibillion-dollar funding from Saudi Arabia. To facilitate its restructuring and prepare for the 2027 season, the league secured potential financing of up to $300 million from BC Partners Credit, alongside a debtor-in-possession bankruptcy loan of $49.6 million from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Under the proposed restructuring backed by BC Partners, players would transition into equity owners of the league and its teams. [1] [2]
During the same bankruptcy proceedings, former Masters champion Sergio Garcia was granted a deal allowing his contract to be terminated. Meanwhile, lawyers representing several other prominent players—including Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, An Byeong-hun, Marc Leishman, Cameron Tringale, and Matthew Wolff—asked a judge to clarify contract statuses and determine whether players can negotiate with third-party tournament organizers and sponsors while their past LIV contracts remain unpaid. LIV lawyers requested additional time to review those contracts, pushing related decisions to a subsequent hearing scheduled for October 14. [1] [2]
