Final NHL Season
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin announced that his 22nd season in the NHL will be his last, marking the beginning of a farewell tour for the league's career goal-scoring record holder. Ovechkin told his teammates the news in the locker room before the team shared a statement on social media, noting that he, his family, and loved ones decided in recent months that the current campaign would conclude his career. Career Milestones and Roster Additions
Ovechkin signed a one-year contract over the summer and turned 41 in September, entering the season with 929 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky's record in April 2025. Ahead of the Capitals' home opener, the front office bolstered the roster around a young core by acquiring forwards Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch via trades, alongside free agent signings Boone Jenner and defenseman Vincent Desharnais, as the team targets another deep playoff run and a Stanley Cup contention.
