Saints and Falcons Meet for Anniversary Rematch
The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to play the Atlanta Falcons in a Domecoming rematch, marking the 20th anniversary of the team's historic return to the Superdome following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Twenty years prior, on September 25, 2006, the franchise played its first home game back in the newly reopened stadium against the same archrivals. [1]
Reflecting on the Historic 2006 Reopening
The original 2006 game is widely remembered for Steve Gleason blocking an early punt from the Falcons, a play known as Rebirth that galvanized a city where 80 percent had been underwater and more than 1,800 people were killed by the storm. Ahead of the anniversary matchup, local broadcasters and media outlets have organized extended coverage, including interviews with former players, musicians who performed at the reopening, and long-serving staff members.
