Real-Life Basis for the Film
The movie follows the events of 2021, when internal Facebook documents leaked by data scientist and former product manager Frances Haugen became the basis for the Wall Street Journal's Facebook Files investigation. The reporting examined major platform issues, including Instagram's impact on teenage body image, special cross-check enforcement procedures for high-profile users, and algorithms that amplified divisive content. While Haugen testified before Congress and global lawmakers following the disclosures, Facebook officials consistently disputed claims that the company knowingly prioritized profits over user safety.
