Meta and Sierra Partner on Open Standard for AI Agent Commerce

Developing Industry Standards for AI Agents

Meta and enterprise AI startup Sierra are collaborating with major corporate partners including Walmart, Stripe, Genesys, Rocket, and Shopify to develop an open standard known as the personal agent protocol. According to David Singleton, vice president of engineering and consumer products at Meta Superintelligence Labs, the initiative aims to establish unified rails for how personal AI agents and business agents interact online. Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor, who is leading the formation of the protocol, stated that current interactions risk remaining chaotic until such a standard exists to provide visibility into agent activities on corporate websites. Security Framework and Consumer Controls

The protocol is designed to handle authentication, empower consumers, and give companies insight into what personal agents do via websites, APIs, or company-owned agents. Operating on established OAuth standards, the system allows consumers to decide what level of access to grant their personal agents, while companies set parameters regarding what those agents can do. The v0.1 specification is slated for publication later this month, accompanied by design workshops and a reference implementation for developers. [1]

Industry Context and Recent Security Challenges

The push for standardization arrives amid broader industry discussions regarding agentic commerce. Last month, a group of major global banks released a paper emphasizing the need for industry-wide standards covering transparency, safety, privacy, choice, and interoperability. Concurrently, tech companies face heightened scrutiny over privacy and security; Amazon recently locked Meta's Muse AI agents out of its shopping platform over concerns regarding account data handling, and reports have highlighted ongoing security and privacy questions surrounding AI agent deployments.
