The 12-Hour Ground Delays and Cancellation
Passengers on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C., to Rome faced a nearly 12-hour overnight ordeal on the tarmac before the trip was ultimately canceled. United Airlines Flight 884 was originally scheduled to leave Washington Dulles International Airport at 5:35 p.m. on Oct. 2 for Rome's Fiumicino Airport. The Boeing 777-200ER never completed the journey, grounded by a cascading sequence of technical problems, severe thunderstorms, a faulty door seal, a pushback tug failure, and crew duty-time limits. Cascading Mechanical and Weather Complications
The disruptions began with an initial one-hour delay due to a cockpit technical issue, followed by severe thunderstorms that prevented takeoff and forced the plane back to the gate to refuel after sitting for three hours. Because of the prolonged time on the tarmac, in-flight meals spoiled and had to be returned, and the initial flight crew hit their legal duty-time limit. A replacement crew was brought aboard, but maintenance issues required an inspection of a faulty door seal. A subsequent mishap occurred when a pushback tug's band snapped and struck the aircraft. Following further inspections, the replacement crew also timed out, leading United Airlines to cancel the flight at around 4 a.m. [1] [2]
Passenger Compensation and Rebooking
Affected travelers were issued $175 vouchers for the disruption and were rebooked on an extra flight that departed from Dulles just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, placing them en route to Rome more than 25 hours behind schedule. [1] [2]
